Ethereum casino game balance: units, rates and what moves

A balance can move for three reasons: a game result, a fee, or a change in the ether rate. Only the first has anything to do with the casino.

Two groups of bars separated by a gap, drawn on one baseline

Which unit is the balance kept in?

Some operators keep an account in ether, others convert at the deposit into a display currency and convert back on withdrawal. The cashier should say which, and the answer decides which of the other two movements you will see.

What moves a balance held in ether?

The rate. If the account is in ether, its value in your own currency follows the market while you play and while you do not. A balance can look higher or lower with no game played, and nothing in the lobby caused it.

Where gas fits

Nowhere inside the account. Gas moves a wallet balance, once, at the deposit and once at the withdrawal. It does not move a game balance, because play is not a transfer on the network.

A way to keep the books straight

Keep two notes: what the account held in its own unit at the start and at the end, and the ether rate at both moments. Any gap in your own currency then splits into two parts, the part the games did and the part the market did. Without the second note it is natural to credit the games with a result that the exchange rate produced, in either direction.

Stake limits and the unit

A stake limit is written in the account's unit. In ether, a limit that looks comfortable on Monday can be a different amount in your own currency on Friday. Read limits in the unit the account uses, and decide what the same stake is worth to you in your own money before the session, not during it.

Quick answers

Why did my casino balance change when I did not play? If the account is held in ether, its value in your own currency follows the market rate.
Does each bet cost a network fee? Not inside an operator's own account. A bet is an entry in its books, not a transfer on the network.
